History
The Food Bank of El Dorado County was established in 2000 by founder
Mike Sproull and a handful of compassionate community activists. El Dorado
County was one of a few counties in California that did not contain a
full service food bank. From a grassroots humble beginning, teamed with
the community, the Food Bank is now the largest collaborative charity
in El Dorado County. The Food Bank provides food assistance on a daily
basis in partnership with over 50 local emergency food response agency
sites including abused and abandoned children's homes, battered women's
shelters, senior centers, local food pantries, soup kitchens, maternity
homes and more.
In 2006 alone our volunteers, financial supporters, product donors, and
charity network made it possible for us to distribute over $2.5
million of food for the hungry of El Dorado County.
Operations
Incorporated in 2000 as a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization,
the Food Bank of El Dorado County is staffed by 3 full-time and 3 part-time
employees. The Food Bank is governed by a board of directors that is representative
of the community it serves. Our volunteer force made up of hundreds of
compassionate local residents contributes significantly to warehouse,
distribution, and office operations by managing, inspecting, sorting,
shelving and distributing donated foods.
The Food Bank of El Dorado County administers and distributes several
programs, including the USDA Emergency Food Assistance Program, the Senior
Brown Bag Program, the Raleys/Bel Air Food for Families Program, the Donate,
Don’t Dump Program, the local Food Rescue Program, etc.
Area of Service
On a daily basis, the Food Bank solicits, receives, warehouses
and distributes donated food within a defined service area, principally
to a wide range of non-profit agencies that operate food assistance programs
for the people of El Dorado County, from El Dorado Hills to South Lake
Tahoe.
